The CrossFit Open: 18.1

This year, I chose to use shadow and light as powerful, competing compositional elements while capturing The Open at CrossFit Bound. The juxtaposition of the two as powerful imagery is something that I could talk about forever…and ever. Ha!

In the sport of CrossFit, we repeatedly delve into the dark, shadowy depths of our minds. The battle we wage internally is as difficult, and perhaps more gory, than the physical expression of every movement. In the shadows, our mental fortitude becomes our most dreaded demon or our greatest strength.

For a long time I ran away from shadows. By running I mean sprinting...hair on fire kind of sprinting. I tried to eliminate them from my images, ignoring them in my own mind and forcing them into extinction in my personal life. Let me tell you- it is exhausting and it makes you hard. Learning to invite myself into the shadows and [sometimes reluctantly] embracing their lessons has proven to be the most arduous and beautiful pursuit I've ever shown up for in my life. So, get to know your shadows. I promise you, they'll become your truest friend and your greatest teacher.

BUT. Where there is darkness, there is light. In a world filled with unpredictability, we show up every single day. In a world built upon loose connections, superficial conversations, safe feelings and screen time, we show up for ourselves craving authenticity and accountability. We show up to tell the humans of this world that we are strong and we are mighty, and they can be, too. We show up for our mothers and daughters, to show them how to be tenacious and demolish stereotypes. We show up for our fathers, our husbands and our grandparents to show them that we are daring and that we are brave. We show up because if we don't put in the work, no one else will care for these bodies that we live and die within. We are the light. We show up. Need I say more?

It is so important to remember that even though we may be alone in the shadow of our minds, we are never alone in this life or in this sport that we love. Together we sweat, cry, curse and celebrate in the triumphs of others as one community. ...3,2,1, GO.

After all, the shadow owes its birth to light. [John Gay]
